California lawmakers are quietly working to roll back criminal justice reforms
Californian lawmakers are noticing an attempt from democrats and republicans to claw back criminal justice reform that was created in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. These laws were created with the goal of decreasing racial profiling and racialized violence in policing. Now, California lawmakers are going back on their promises in order to keep receiving money from interest groups for their reelection campaigns. One of these interest groups is the Peace Officers Research Association of California, which has poured over $20 million into clawing back regulations. Police unions and other law enforcement agencies are being empowered to do what they want without proper checks, and limited accountability.
These legislators are meant to represent Californians, not cave to whatever fascist authoritarian organization waves the biggest wallet in their faces. This issue highlights once again that politics are no longer a left versus right issue, this is a people versus corporations and billionaires issue. We can fight their wallets with people power and mass organization, but we’ll need to start by having an educated working class. That’s why Prop 13 reform is so important! Our schools need to properly educate our next generation to join the fight against money backed authoritarianism.
