Housing Should Be a Universal Right!
Organizers across the nation are calling for rent control in order to protect tenants from greedy profit-seeking corporations who want nothing more than to raise rent. PolicyLink emphasizes that the impact of rent control would help empower tenants and landlords alike, and would lift up marginalized, low-income BIPOC communities. PolicyLink states, “if rent control were to become a reality in 45 states without existing policies, 31.5 million additional renter households will be stabilized… 19.7 million (or 60 percent) would be low-income, and 14.7 million (or 47 percent) would be households of color.” With rent control being implemented nationwide, it would help bring stability and change that could truly change the lives of many within the U.S.
Rent control is important because it ensures that the community is being first, that we are protecting renters and tenants, and we are preventing pushing people out and placing them on the street because of high rent. We must implement equitable policies that support the best interests of the working class, and rent control is one of them. Here in California, rent control is something that is more important than ever. We are in a housing crisis where people are being pushed out of their homes, kicked out of their RVs, and we have local public policies that are targeting marginalized, low-income BIPOC communities housing and human rights. We deserve to have stable housing, as housing should be seen as a universal right.
