Education, Civic Engagement, & Democracy

Alex Cullins

Alex’s project identifies and analyzes the phenomenon wherein higher levels of education indicate more left-leaning politics and higher rates of civic engagement. She continues this analysis by viewing this phenomenon through the lens of Tocqueville. She points to the decline in literary rates and democratic backsliding as contributors to this phenomenon, and indicates that mandatory K-12 civic education and free college would help more people participate in civic engagement.
