Trump Cuts Could Worsen Deficit, But Don’t Panic

Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” has the potential to worsen San Francisco’s budget woes. Federal Trump cuts are set to cost San Francisco hundreds of millions of dollars as soon as 2027. This is not reason to panic, however. There are ways in which we can rectify the deficit, even with the hundreds of millions of dollars Trump is going to add to it, if we simply tax the rich and reform Proposition 13. Reforming Proposition 13 alone can bring in around $1 billion to the city of San Francisco, not to mention the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars that can be brought in by taxing the wealthy, depending on how it’s done. There is no need to worry about deficits and budget cuts every time budget season rolls around. We can have a city that can fund everything we need and more, all we have to do is tax corporations and the wealthy.

Taxing the wealthy and reforming Prop. 13 is not just a possibility, it is necessary. Tens of thousands of people in San Francisco could lose access to the ways in which they get food and health services. It is understandable for people to be concerned. We must organize to push lawmakers to find the political will to reform Proposition 13, for the sake of our public services.
