Fund the People, Not the Cops!
The San Francisco Police are on track to exceed their overtime pay budget by arresting protesters. Data from the City Controller’s Office shows that after three protests against ICE in June the San Francisco police racked up protester arrests and overtime pay. They were questioned by city Supervisor Jackie Fielder on why they did little to protect San Franciscans from abuses of federal agents and possible imposters. Moreover, they are being investigated for potential violation of California state law by providing license plate data to the federal government.
As San Franciscans, we should question the use of public funds for police overtime. Not only do they ask for more and more at any opportunity, they also use it to further Trump’s agenda. Our own community is arrested and villainized for actually trying to protect our undocumented neighbors. All the while, vital programs to support our vulnerable communities are cut and San Franciscans are left to fend for themselves. Instead of funding our police to restrict our first amendment rights, we need to be funding affordable housing, schools, and public services. If we can’t rely on our city leaders to do the work, we must do it ourselves by striving to reform Prop. 13 and generate $17 billion every year in corporate property taxes!
