Why expand programs when you can just build a whole new school?

Parents in San Francisco United School District are upset after SFUSD staff, who know their school communities best, share a report where they oppose the opening of a new Mandarin immersion charter school. While parents are upset about waitlists and the cost of private schools, staff have legal, academic, and financial concerns with opening a charter.

Staff are justified in their concern over opening a charter school. Not only do charter schools take funding away from public schools, they can discriminate against disabled students and students of color, or anyone perceived as “harder to teach.” Instead of opening up a whole new charter school, we need to reform Prop. 13 to fully fund public schools and expand their dual immersion programs.
