Huge Win for SF Budget Advocates
Thanks to the advocacy of San Francisco’s People’s Budget Coalition, SF’s newest budget includes restorations for numerous city services previously intended to be cut by the Mayor. Some of the funding that was restored includes the Free City College program, HIV prevention services, and support for seniors. The Board of Supervisors were able to find places in the budget where excess spending was unnecessary, including being able to buy pickup trucks for cheaper.
However, multiple sources, like Board President Rafael Mandelmann, noted that the reason there was less to fight for is because of cuts in previous years. While there were less cuts this year, essential services that have been cut in previous years should still have their funding restored. Additionally, some of the funding that Mayor Lurie closed the deficit with came from reallocating Proposition I funds that were meant for affordable housing.
That is why it is so important to fight for new revenue sources for the city, like taxing billionaires and corporations with millions of dollars of excess wealth. In a city as rich as San Francisco, it should not be a struggle every year to find funding to better the city and the lives of everyone in it.
