Are You Tired of Parcel Taxes? Then Let’s Reform Prop. 13
California voters are signaling that they are tired of approving new school bonds and parcel taxes year after year. The passage rate for these voter approved funding measures fell well below the historic average. This poses a question: If voters do not want to fund our public schools and communities through school bonds and parcel taxes, how can we fund our schools and communities?
There is a simple solution to this problem, and that is reforming Proposition 13 and closing the corporate loophole, which would restore $17 billion every year to California’s schools and communities. The only reason we have to pass so many voter approved funding measures every year is because of Prop. 13 in the first place. With that $17 billion every year restored, and corporations paying their fair share in property taxes, we wouldn’t need to pass on the costs of running public education to voters through school bonds and parcel taxes.
Corporations endlessly profit off of doing business in our state, so why shouldn’t they pay us back through property taxes? We MUST reform Prop. 13, so that we don’t have to risk funding for public education failing at the ballot box.
