Another Attack on Vital and Necessary DEI Programs
The Trump administration made it clear from the start of their term that there would be an attack on DEI programs that support students of color and students from a low income background. They made sure that these attacks were to hit where it hurts the most, which meant taking away grants that help these programs stay open and functioning. TRIO is one of the most diverse and effective programs in the country; assigning over 800,000 students across the country, opening doors and possibilities students never thought would be possible. Without these grants, students all over California will lose one of the few programs that advocates for higher education to disadvantaged students.
California has the opportunity to fund these programs and schools with proper resources, to bridge the systemic inequities that hundreds of communities all over California face. By reforming Prop 13 we are able to protect California students from Trump’s administration's threats. We can protect our students by funding programs and schools to make higher education more accessible.
Two words in UC Berkeley grant application have led to defunding of 50-year-old program
