Another Corporate Tax Loophole on the Ballot

Large corporations are once again pouring money into a ballot measure that will largely benefit themselves. As Michael Hiltzik says astutely, “After all, it’s what they do: Complain incessantly about the poor level of public services, while taking steps to make them even poorer.”

The Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act, despite its name, is not at all going to protect everyday taxpayers nor keep the government accountable. The real protections go to large corporations, especially big real estate, and government accountability will, in fact, be reduced. To make things even more transparent, the co-sponsor of this bill is the California Business Roundtable. The real goal of this initiative is to “make it harder for local governments to impose or raise taxes and fees.” This is absolutely detrimental to our local community services, we must not let this get this measure on the ballot.
